Alex Bithrey in Keith Bass Trophy success
Thu 29th Jul
32 selected under 14 boys from Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Bedfordshire played for the Keith Bass Trophy at Dunstable Downs Golf Club on 27th July. The youngsters played 27 holes in the wind and rain and the nett prize was won by Alex Bithrey (South Beds) who finished on 4 under.
The Keith Bass Trophy itself, which is played off scratch, was won by John Withington (Essex) with a gross 112 for 27 holes. For the first time, a team prize was offered for the afternoons scores with the best 3 gross and the best 3 nett scores counting. This was won by the strong Essex team but it certainly motivated the boys, some of whom had had a poor first 9 holes, to continue to try really hard in the afternoon for the sake of their team.
Thank you to Dunstable Downs for the use of their course and facilities which were excellent.

Great Colts Fight Back
Mon 26th Jul
Beds Colts played Herts Colts at West Herts Golf Club on Saturday 24th July 2010.
Both counties lost four players to The English Amateur Championship practice rounds at Little Aston & Sutton Coldfield. Michael Conybeare (Tilsworth GC) and Simon Scully (Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands GC) from the U18s squad both made their debut for the Colts team. In the morning foursomes Niall Johnston & Darren Close played in the top game against Herts No 1 pairing of Tom Speyers & Nick Algate. Going 3 down early in the match the Beds pair fought back well, but eventually lost on the 18th hole 2 down. Match No 2 involving Matt Hill & Michael Conybeare who were also 3 down early in the match then staged a great fight back going into the 18th all square but unfortunately lost their ball from the tee shot & lost the hole & game 1 down. Game 3 paired Connor Boyle & Simon Scully against Stephen Payne & Sam Cutting. The Bedfordshire pairing, previously unbeaten in junior matches took control early in the game winning 3/2 & look very secure - well played. Match 4 saw another fight back only to end in disappointment for Beds with Alex Harris & Michael George standing on the 17th tee all square after being down for the whole game until that point. A wayward tee shot resulted in a bogey five to lose the hole & a halved 18th gave a 1 down loss for Beds. Morning foursomes result 3-1 to Hertfordshire.

Something needed to happen quickly in the afternoon singles games & Darren Close (South Beds) had the job of playing in the top game to bring home a point. Darren played very good golf winning 2/1 v Ollie Brown. Darren showed great composure when on hole 16, a blind Par 3 into a sunken green, his ball could not be found. Both players felt confident the ball had hit the green but a group of young children were seen running from the hole after the tee shots had been played. Following a ruling, it was decided Darren would have to go back to the tee now play 3! With his opponent safely on the green in one Darren lost the hole but took this in his stride & went on to halve the 17th & win his game. Credit must go to Hertfordshire''s Ollie Brown who would have been happy for Darren to play the shot again without penalty but rules are rules. Thank you Ollie for your sportsmanship!
Game no2 paired up Alex Harris (JOG) v Herts strong man Tom Speyer. In a closely fought encounter the game swung between 1 up to 1 down on several occasions. Standing on the 18th tee all square, Alex Harris showed great nerve in hitting a drive and a 9 iron onto the par 5 only to be a little unlucky for the ball to pitch in the middle of a steep tier in the green kicking the ball to the very back of the green some 35'' away from the pin. Tom Speyers eventually reached the green in 3 shots only to hole a 14'' birdie putt & when Alex''s 5'' birdie attempt agonizingly slipped past on the left side his game was lost 1 down. Well played Alex against a very tough competitor.
Michael Connybeare (Tilsworth) lost 3/2 against Herts hard man Nick Algate but looked to play some very good golf and will gain from the experience. I hope he will continue as an active squad member.
Connor Boyle continues to impress in match play. Connor had two eagles in three holes with the best coming at the 15th when he holed out from 105 yards for a two on a par 4 ! Very well done and maximum points on the day - keep it up.
Both Matt Hill (Leighton Buzzard) winning 4&3 & Michael George (Millbrook GC) winning 2&1 impressed. A special thanks must go to Matt Hill for his commitment to Bedfordshire. Matt delayed his practice rounds for the English Amateur by 24 hrs resulting in him having to play three days of consecutive 36 holes on Saturday, Sunday & the championship on Monday. I hope all players look at this & will give priority to BCGU whenever possible!
This left the last match on the course between Niall Johnston (Aspley Guise) & Sam Cutting. Niall was 1 up on the 18th tee & gaining a win would halve the match 6-6. Niall''s tee shot unluckily found long grass just off the right side of the fairway, and, in chipping out onto a sloping burnt fairway for his second shot he found rough & trees on the left had side. His third shot found him pin high right of the green but still in semi rough, with his opponent in a greenside bunker for two. Niall calmly played the most skilful lob shot landing along the steep tier only to run straight into the hole for an unlikely but magnificent birdie 4 & a win !

Well played team and a great fight back winning the single 5-3. We now move onto Essex away on 28th August at Colne Valley GC. This will prove a stern test but our team have gained massive confidence from this result. Team selection will be critical for this match.

I would like to thanks Stuart Goode - Secretary for his help in transporting players early in the morning & his support on the course - thanks again Stuart. Clive Allen - Vice President was superb staying all day ( following a couple of hours work in the morning !) and continues to give support with valuable knowledge and advice having watched Bedfordshire for many years & gone through all the emotional highs and lows! Great to see our President Chris Foster & his wife Christine attending for the opening tee shots in the afternoon, the players really do appreciate it.

Seniors latest matches
Tue 20th Jul
The EGU foursomes qualifying event was held at Sheringham Golf Club in Norfolk. The four counties, Beds, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridge area were drawn to play in the morning and Bedfordshire drew Norfolk - which was a great draw for us. Unfortunately we were missing two key players, one due to holiday and the other to a hand injury which meant we had a slightly weaker team. However, having got the draw we wanted we failed to perform to the best of our abilities and as a result lost the match 3 - 2. There were fine wins by Bill Love and Jim Gleasure, and also by Gordon Fuller and Peter Jones. As usual, everybody tried their hardest but on the day we were not good enough.

We also played a league match against Hertfordshire at South Herts Golf Club. Hertfordshire however turned up with a very strong team indeed and we suffered a crushing 8½; to 1½; defeat. This now leaves us one league match left against Middlesex so hopefully we can come up with a result in this fixture.

South Eastern Group County Qualifier
Mon 12th Jul
The EGU South Eastern Group County Qualifier was held at Stoneham Golf Club, nr Southampton on 10th July. The high temperature was tempered in part by a strong wind, but this led to tricky playing conditions. This is a six man, scratch event where all scores count so there is no hiding place. Bedfordshire finished in 10th place, but punched above their weight when team handicaps are taken into consideration. The worthy winners Hampshire, as well as having home advantage, had a team handicap of +13, as did Essex and Sussex, whilst BB & O's team handicap was +15. Every other Counties team had a plus handicap, whereas Bedfordshire's was scratch, so the team deserve much credit for their performance on the day.

County Win Away
Sun 4th Jul
Bedfordshire were away to Middlesex for our second league match of the season which was played on Sunday 4th July 2010 at Enfield golf club.
The weekend got off to a difficult start with Matt Hill injuring his back during the practice round on Saturday evening. It was Captain's Day but the club kindly allowed us to practice, and we are very grateful to Enfield Golf Club for their hospitality all weekend. Matt's injury meant calling for Craig Nield at 9 o'clock that night to replace him on the Sunday.

The match began in fine sunny weather and, with the wind freshening, the morning foursomes looked like being shared, as the last pair of Gavin Samuels and Darren Close were 3 down with 3 to play. They played really well, however, and won the last three holes for a half, to give us a one point lead at lunch.

We needed four points in the afternoon singles for our first win of the season and got off to a really good start, as after nine holes we were up in all but one match. Our first point came from Paul Kirkwood and from then on the points came quickly with us winning the next three games, the winning putt coming from Darren Close who birdied the last two holes to win 1 up.

The final result was Bedfordshire 8 Middlesex 4, and was a fantastic team performance with everyone contributing points.

The team spirit was, and is, excellent and it is a credit to the whole squad that we can bring players into the team without any concerns, knowing they will fit in well. A special mention must go to Craig Nield for stepping in at the last minute and playing so well all day.

Our next match is at home to Hertfordshire on 1st August at Beds and County. This will be a tough match but we are looking forward to it with renewed confidence.

Can I thank all those who came to support us on the day, it is much appreciated by all the players.

EGU SEG Seniors County Qualifying
Thu 17th Jun
This event was held at Littlestone Golf Club in Kent on 13th and 14th June. On the first day the weather was fine, but with strong winds. The best returned score for any competitor on the day was four over par - and the field included many scratch golfers. CSS for the day was 74 against a par of 71, and the best Bedfordshire score for the day was a very credible 78 by Les Sharman. Our team was ahead of Middlesex, Essex and Norfolk after the first day, which was a good performance considering the strong counties entered. It''s worth mentioning that we were only 2 strokes behind Hertfordshire.
On the second day, the wind was very much stronger and scores across the board reflected the conditions. The first day resulted in an average score of 80 but the second day resulted in an average score of 83. The best second day score for Bedfordshire was Les Sharman again, returning a 79. The final result put us in 8th position out of 11. We were 20 shots ahead of Middlesex, 38 shots ahead of Norfolk and 14 shots ahead of Essex, and, overall this was a very good performance from the team under extremely testing conditions. My thanks to Brendan Walsh, Graham Crawford, Harry Williams, Les Sharman and Phil Corke for working so hard. My thanks also to Gordon Fuller for travelling as reserve and for supporting the team.

County 'B' Championships Postponed
Tue 15th Jun
Entries for the County ''B'' Championships on 11th July were so poor, probably because of the clash with the football World Cup Final, that it has been moved to SUNDAY 17th OCTOBER. Bedfordshire Golf Club have been kind enough to agree to the re-arranged date and it is hoped that entries will improve.

County vs Essex
Mon 14th Jun
Bedfordshire were hosts to National County Champions Essex at Dunstable yesterday (13th June).

Following some excellent performances recently the team were high on confidence and full of expectation.
Unfortunately, on Thursday we lost County Champion Gavin Samuels for the very best of reasons - he qualified for the British Amateur Championships at Muirfield and North Berwick.

The morning foursomes were lost 3-1 with Charlie O''Brien and Andy Taylor taking our only point. Our home bankers, Chris Spooner and Rob Sutton, lost 2 & 1 to some of the most amazing golf on the back nine with Essex chipping in twice and holing from off the green three times.

The afternoon singles were always going to be a tough ask, with Bedfordshire needing to win six of the eight singles. However the team fought back really well, and we were up in the last two matches on the course, having already won three matches. A halved match looked the likely outcome for a long time but Essex came back again and disappointingly we lost both those last two matches over the last two holes. The final result was 8 - 4 to Essex

In the corresponding match last year we lost 7 1/2 -1/2 in the singles so although we have improved we can see we have to be at our best both mentally and physicaly to compete at this level and some hard work is still to be done.

There is no doubt we are improving and we have some good young talent who are prepared to fight hard, the team spirit is as good as ever and we are on the right track. The next match is away to Middlesex at Enfield golf club on June 4th.

My thanks to Dunstable Golf Club for allowing us to use their excellent facilities, and to the County Officials and supporters on the day. Both were much appreciated.

Seniors vs BB & O
Wed 9th Jun
The Seniors team played BB&O at Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands on 7th June. Their Captain was aware that we had beaten Essex the previous month and therefore he brought along a very strong team to try and ensure success. It was indeed a very strong team and the match resulted in an 8-2 win for BB&O. Harry Williams was the star of our side taking a point against David Doosan, whilst Brendan Walsh and Gordon Fuller followed up with a half point each. As we all know, it is always going to be tough to beat a county with about 120 clubs to pick from - but well done to all our team for a valiant effort.

County and Colts Championships
Sun 6th Jun
The new County Champion is Gavin Samuels (Leighton Buzzard) who shot a 5 under par 4 round total of 283 to finish one shot ahead of Robert Sutton (Dunstable Downs) in an exciting finish today at The Bedford Golf Club. Gavin stood on the 18th tee three shots ahead of his nearest rival, but contrived to make a 6. Robert made a Par 4 which left him one shot behind and Gavin the winner by the narrowest of margins. Dunstable Downs A, - Robert Sutton, Phil Sutton and Chris Spooner were comfortable Winners of the Team prize.
The Bedford Golf Club were superb hosts for the County's premiere competition with the course presented in great condition and the food and drink was of the highest standards. Thank you to them for all they did over the weekend.

Mon 31st May
The County Foursomes Championships were held on Sunday 30th May at Bedford and County Golf Club. The course presented in excellent condition on a fine sunny, but breezy, day. 72 players entered and Paul Kitching and Mark Yeomans (The Millbrook GC) shot a fine 145 to win by one shot from Niall Johnston and Ben Howells (Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands GC).

After the competitors had enjoyed a superb evening meal, prize vouchers totalling £900 were presented by County President Chris Foster to winners in various categories.

County Second at Seacroft
Tue 18th May
The Eastern Inter Counties Foursomes took -place at Skegness (Seacroft Golf Club) over the weekend of 15th & 16th May 2010, and what a weekend it turned out to be!
For those of you who are not familiar with the format, it is a 10 man team event. Nine counties take part and play 72 holes of scratch foursomes over two days, with each match consisting of six players representing three counties who play against each other.
In the first session on Saturday morning Bedfordshire were up against Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. The team in playing order was Charlie O'Brien and Andy Taylor, Mark Carter and Darren Close, Rob Sutton and Chris Spooner, Paul Kirkwood and Niall Johnston and Gavin Samuels and Blane Breheny. We won every match and scored a perfect 10, beating both teams 5-0. This is only the second time in the competition's long history that a team has scored the maximum points and was a perfect start to the day.
In the afternoon we took on Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire and, keeping the same line up, we beat Herts 3½; to 1½; and Cambs by 3 to 2. At the end of a fantastic first day we were leading with 16½; points, with Lincolnshire second a half point behind, and Essex a further 4½; points behind in third.
For the record it should be noted that the majority of the counties were at full strength as for once the Brabazon Trophy did not clash with the event, so a great first day surpassing all our expectations.
The second day was always going to be difficult as we were playing Lincolnshire and Suffolk. The team were really up for the game and we played an unchanged team in the same order, but came up short against an excellent Lincs side who beat us 4½; to ½; however we managed a win over Suffolk 3-2.
We changed the playing order for the final session against Norfolk and a strong Essex side by pushing Mark Carter and Darren Close up to one, followed by Sutton and Spooner, O'Brien and Taylor, with the last two pairs keeping thei same order.
At this stage we were 4 points behind Lincolnshire and 2½; ahead of Essex so we needed a big effort and we got it. We were excellent all afternoon beating Norfolk 3-2 and halving with Essex, importantly we played really well down the last three holes.
The final result left us in second place with 25½; points which would have won the tournament in four out of the last five years. Lincolnshire, however, had a championship record 32½; points from a possible 40 which is a phenomenal performance for such a young side and they were an absolute credit to the event. It is also perhaps worth noting, that this is a scratch event, but the Lincolnshire's team handicap totalled +8, whereas Bedfordshire's totalled 0.
In summary the team performed magnificently, I won't pick out anyone as it is a team event, but our lowest scoring pair achieved 4½; points of a possible 8 which is really encouraging, and, importantly, our foursomes play has improved massively. One highlight worthy of a mention, however, was on the last day where Chris Spooner holing out from around 170 yards into the wind on the stroke index 1 seventh for an eagle 2. What a shot.
I will also mention Michael George who was part of the 11 man team but didn't get to play because changing a winning team would not have been the best course of action. His efforts in supporting the team and his attitude to the disappointment of not playing were exemplary.
Finally my thanks go to all the officials and their partners for their support which is much appreciated, and to Vice Captain Phil Sutton whose experience is invaluable, and for filling in for me on the Friday.

Seniors Win in Essex
Mon 17th May
The league season has begun and the first match for the Seniors was against Essex away at Upminster. Bedfordshire Seniors have not won this match for a considerable number of years as Essex can always field a very strong team. How things change! Bedfordshire won at Upminster 5 & a half points to 4 & a half. A terrific win which was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody in the team. It was great to see everybody''s faces, the grins were so wide. A special mention to a newcomer this season, Tim Bevan from Chalgrave. Tim got drawn against Geof King, an English Seniors International, and came away with a half point. A very good start. Let''s hope we can keep this up when we play BB&O early June at Aspley Guise.

TIP on Tour to Wales
Thu 13th May
Five players, Blane Breheny, Alex Harris, Rob Sutton, Matt Hill and Michael George from the Talent Id Program travelled to North Wales to participate in the Clwyd Open Championships over the weekend 8/9th May. This was played at Prestatyn GC (36 holes-links) and Wrexham GC (36 holes-parkland) Also taking part was the 2009 Bedfordshire County Champion Niall Johnson

This is a Welsh order of merit tournament and the Welsh Senior & Youth national squad players were in attendance. There were 72 players taking part with 42 players playing off scratch or better. This event was chosen to give the players experience in playing in a quality field and the chance to play two very different courses with the added bonus that all players are expected to play both days.

On Saturday 8th May we saw very windy conditions at Prestatyn GC and the scoring indicated this with players struggling with the conditions. All our players managed to return some good scores and there were some big lessons learnt along the way. Special mention must go to Blane Breheny for the way he stayed positive and motivated after only being one over when starting his last hole at Prestatyn only to take a ten on a par four. If it was not for this Blane certainly would have been in the mix for a top ten finish.

The next days play took place at Wrexham GC which was in fantastic condition with the greens running very fast. Conditions were a little easier and all the TIP players returned some good scores. Rob Sutton managed to finish in 33rd position with Blane Breheny close behind in 35th place. Matt Hill came in 40th place with a superb last round of 73.

All the TIP players and Niall learnt some valuable lessons on and off the course, which hopefully will help them develop into better players in the future.

On a personal note it was a pleasure to take these young players away and they showed Bedfordshire in a good light and conducted themselves in an exemplary fashion.

Bedfordshire Schools Championship
Thu 29th Apr
The 2010 Bedfordshire County Schools Championships were held at Caddington Golf Club on 27th April in ideal sunny conditions. In the Boys Championship Michael Conybeare (Vandyke Upper) excelled with a gross 70 to become the Boys'' Scratch Champion and win the Johnson Salver, one shot ahead of Blane Breheny (Luton VI Form College) on 71. Aaron Roberts (Bedford College) snatched 3rd place on countback from Matt Hill (Cedars Upper), both on 74.

The Under 16 County title and Charlie O''Brien Cup went to Ryan Stamp (Sharnbrook Upper) with a 76, who squeezed out Jack Turner (Manshead Upper) by a single shot (77) after Jack bogeyed each of the last 3 holes. Harry Wettan (Bedford School) was 3rd on 78.

Fiona Cooper (Sharnbrook Upper) continued her impressive early season form in winning the Girls County title and the Forrester Salver with a gross 76/nett 66, six shots ahead of Sophie Hiller (St Andrews, Bedford) on 82. Young Ella Ofstedahl (Robert Bloomfield Middle, Bedford) came 3rd on 85.

In the Team Championship Vandyke Upper, retained their hold on the Cyril Rose Shield for a second year with a score of 148, ahead of local Leighton Buzzard rivals, Cedars Upper on 155. Besides Michael Conybeare''s individual winning score, Jonny Whiting (78) and Adam Bartlett (79) completed the team effort.

All the leading players were selected to represent Bedfordshire at the SE Schools Championships in Norwich at Eaton GC during half term with William Orchard (Manshead Upper) and Nic Cunningham (Sandy Upper) on the reserve list. Sam Towler (Bedford Modern), Curtis Sage-Passant (Cedars Upper) and Harry Wettan (Bedford School) were elected to join Ryan Stamp, Jack Turner and Ella Ofstedahl in the England Schools U/16 Championship in Cheshire in July.

Seniors vs Norfolk Friendly
Wed 28th Apr
The friendly with Norfolk Seniors was held at The Bedford Golf Club on 27th April. The match consisted of two teams of 10 players, with a 9 hole foursome format in the morning and 18 hole singles in the afternoon. Bedfordshire had a great morning session taking 4 1/2 points to Norfolk''s 1/2 point. Newcomer to the Seniors Les Sharman partnered with veteran campaigner Brendan Walsh took the 1/2 point match and newcomers Chris Walker and Charlie Snelling partnering to take their first point.
Norfolk decided that in the afternoon each singles match would be worth 2 points for a win - I presume hoping to make up some of the points lost in the morning. Unfortunately for them this did not happen and Bedfordshire took the afternoon matches with 7 wins and 3 losses resulting in an overall win for Bedfordshire 18 1/2 points to 6 1/2. Well done to the whole team.

Our thanks also to Vice President Clive Allen who came to The Bedford in the afternoon to act as starter.

Hopefully this success will progress into our league matches which begin May against Essex.

Thanks also to The Bedford Golf Club for hosting this event - it is much appreciated.

Colts vs Seniors
Mon 26th Apr
The second playing of Bedfordshire Colts v Bedfordshire Seniors took place on Saturday 24th April 2010 at The Bedford GC. Teams of 8 players per side played 4 foursomes matches.

Playing in the top match were new Colts pairing of Michael George & Darren Close. Their opponents were Seniors new boy Les Sharman (Bedfordshire GC) & Steve Montague (Aspley Guise GC). The Colts eventually won 1 up but not after a fighting finish from the Seniors. Les Sharman hit a superb 2 iron into 15 feet on the trick par 3, 17th, Steve Montague then holed the putt taking the match down the 18th. Looks like Peter Jones, Seniors Captain will need to order an XXXL shirt as Les will feature in the Seniors side I'm sure!

In the second match, new boy Gary Munro promoted from U18's performed well with now experienced player Alex Harris in beating County Captain Phil Corke & his partner Harry Williams both from John O'Gaunt. Ladies European tour referee Steve Kavanagh was asked to give a ruling following play at the long par 5, 14th when the Colts drive finished on a bridge covering a hazard (ditch). The Seniors claiming you cannot ground your club when playing the shot, therefore loss of hole at a critical time in the game. Gary & Alex took the loss of hole decision very well, going on to win the match easily but in fact this ruling was deemed incorrect with the bridge being classed an obstruction therefore you can ground your club when executing the shot. Lee Westwood at Wentworth was the test case sited.

Match 3 was a classic young bucks v golden oldies. Plenty of banter coming from Peter Jones, Seniors Captain playing with County Vice President Clive Allen. Lewis Blair was hitting some prodigious drives but the shot of the day came from Jack Turner on the Par 3 15th. Jack thinned a rescue club off the tee only to see his ball heading for the large pond front right of the green. With so much top spin the Seniors watched in disbelief as the ball hopped across the water in true ''Barnes Wallis'' fashion eventually coming to rest just short of the green. Lewis Blair chipped the ball close & Jack holed for a simple 3 - par always looked a likely score!!! Lewis & Jack went on to win their game 3 & 1.

The last match was played with a new pairing of Chris Sweetnam & Nathan Dunlop (Pavenham Park GC). Their Seniors pairing of Gordon Fuller & Jim Gleasure looked to play fine consistent golf. Gordon stood out as the player in form and played some wonderful golf, no more impressive being the long bunker shot on the 3rd hole to 4 feet to secure the win. Gordon & Jim went on the win their game 3 & 1. Thanks to Chris who was suffering jet lag having been delayed returning from America due to the volcanic ash fly situation & Nathan playing his second match for the Colts. Have a good early season as we will be looking at you both.

A big thank you to the Seniors who seem to really enjoy this fixture and remain very competitive in their golf. They would love nothing better than to gain victory over the Colts and I believe this match should remain a regular fixture to help both teams in their pre-season preparations.

Thanks also to County President Chris Foster & Immediate Past President David Oliver for their support on the day and to The Bedford GC for providing the course in superb condition and good food for the match.

Paul Fletcher Trophy
Mon 19th Apr
The Paul Fletcher Trophy, held at Bedford & County on Sunday 18th April, was excellently supported with 20 County players entered, plus many County Executives. Mark Wharton won the Trophy for the fourth time in seven years, and is shown receiving the trophy from Laurie Fletcher, Paul's father. It was played in what were probably the best conditions we've ever had for this event, a warm day with just a little breeze. First prize in the team event went to: David Taylor, Darren Close, Ron Etheridge and David Daniels with the Runners up prize going to: Mark Wharton, Lewis Blair, Jim Simmons and Tony Straccia. The sum of £860.00 was raised for the hospice at St. Johns, Moggerhanger.

U18's vs Northamptonshire Friendly
Fri 16th Apr
With Under 18s matches coming thick and fast, the team next played at The Millbrook Golf Club on 15th April. Both sides fielded 12 players per side playing foursomes and singles.
The foursomes performance was very poor. Beds lost the series 5.5 to 0.5, with our only half coming from Sam Brown & Gary Munro. I''m pleased to report the team bounced back for the afternoon matches though, winning the series 6.5 to 5.5.
Aaron Roberts playing in the top match won 3 & 2, well done Aaron. Jack Turner played very well gaining a halved match and Simon Scully won 2 & 1 to boost his confidence after a poor foursomes performance partnering Nick Cunningham, well done Simon.
New team member, Gary Munro looks a good prospect winning 1 up showing good nerve & a steady hand to hole a 12 foot putt on the last green in front of the Northants team! Luke Kenney continues to impress at U18 level winning his game 2 & 1 and looks secure in the side. Ryan Stamp, U16''s & TIP player was very impressive winning his game 3 & 2. He appears to have an old head on young shoulders, well done Ryan! Harry Bond also played well in the afternoon winning 4 & 2 and he was ahead for most of his game, keep up the good work Harry.

County vs Northamptonshire Friendly Match
Mon 12th Apr
The County team's final friendly match of the season took place at Pavenham Park Golf Club, on Sunday 11th April 2010, against our traditional rivals Northamptonshire. The course was in excellent condition, with the fast sloping greens in good, early season condition.
The match clashed with the Palmerston Trophy at Brocket Hall and those players who were eligible for that were encouraged to take part, in order for them to play against high quality opposition which will benefit the County in the future. This gave us the chance to go deep into our squad and provide an opportunity for some of the players to show what they could do.
The team exceeded all our expectations, only just losing to a very experienced side eight points to seven. The morning foursomes were halved and as in the Cambridge match it took a birdie on the last to beat us in one of the matches. The singles could have gone either way for most of the afternoon session, with both teams playing excellent golf on the testing Pavenham Park greens.
In many ways this was a more pleasing result that our halved match against Cambridge, eight players were 21 or under and three under 17 all of whom played extremely well, if they continue to progress Bedfordshire has a bright future.
Can I thank all those at Pavenham Park Golf Club for making us so welcome on the day.

U16's Win in Cambridgeshire
Sun 11th Apr
The U16's first friendly match took place at New Malton G.C. on Sunday 11th April against Cambridgeshire. The weather was sunny and dry, but with a strong, cold, wind. The course has recently been purchased by new owners and after much preparation there is still improvement to be made as the course was quite hard and bumpy on the day.

We took an eight man team and a reserve Tom Pemberton. Cambridge had a player fall sick in the car park, and we lent them Tom, to make up the foursomes. He was the major force in securing 1 point from 4 for Cambridgeshire. We had a 3-1 foursomes lead, thanks to a brave gutsy performance from Matthew Mead. He battled through the last 6 holes with a badly damaged finger, and, after being dormie 4 up, rolled in a long putt on the last green to halve the hole and win their match.

Matthew retired hurt at lunchtime, so we played seven singles matches in the afternoon. Honours were even in the singles with some fine golf from both teams.

It was very pleasing to be the first Bedfordshire team to win a match this season 6 1/2 to 4 1/2. Many congratulations to the players who took part.

Finally I would like to thank Dave Underwood and Clive Allen for their fantastic support on the day.

U18's vs Cambridgeshire Friendly Match
Fri 9th Apr
The U18's team played a 10 a side friendly against Cambridgeshire at Colmworth & North Beds Golf Club in very good weather conditions on 9th April. The match was sadly lost 7 - 3.
Jack Turner played very well winning his game 2 up, Alex Buckley won 4 & 2 & anchor man Luke Kenney won 4 & 3. These three were our only points winners in what was unfortunately a disappointing performance after a solid BUT Trophy. Three other matches did go to the 18th hole and if we had won this hole, the result would have been a much closer 4.5 / 5.5.
Thank you to Sam Brown playing his first county match. Sam, who was selected at short notice, played very well before eventually losing on the 18th and he looks capable of playing regular county golf at this level.

BUT Trophy
Thu 8th Apr
The BUT Trophy is an annual triangular match between under 18's teams from Beds, Norfolk & Leicestershire, which this year was played at Royal Cromer Golf Club. In the morning foursomes there were good performances from Matt Hill & Luke Kenney playing in the top match & winning the 18th hole from both Leics & Norfolk to halve both games. Aaron Roberts & Alex Buckley played very solid golf gaining two wins so Beds were lying in second place at lunch.
The afternoon singles matches started with Matt Hill playing against Greg Eason from Leicestershire, who plays off +3 and was on top form finally beating Matt on the 12th green. Matt was playing good golf himself beating his Norfolk opponent by 4/2. Lewis Blair, still only 15 years of age looks a fine prospect for Bedfordshire gaining a half point from Leicestershire. Aaron Roberts completed his 100% record remaining unbeaten on the day winning both his singles comfortably playing superbly consistent golf & looks in fine form for the county. Luke Kenney proved his fighting spirit again winning both his singles matches again playing very good consistent golf in difficult conditions. Jack Turner continues to perform well. He's also just 15 years old but he seems to have been around for years! Jack won both his games impressively having lost a good lead on Jack Yule of Norfolk going into the 18th hole all square but won the hole to secure victory. Lewis Adams U16''s managed a very good half point v Simon Stevens of Norfolk.

Bedfordshire finally finished in 3rd place on 12 points, Leicestershire 2nd on 14 points with Norfolk on home soil winning the BUT Trophy with 18.5 points. Royal Cromer proved a superb venue, the weather was not kind to us being wet, windy & very cold on the east coast but our players managed these condition well. We had a good team spirit with the players remaining positive throughout the tournament. We look forward to 2011 at Leicestershire.

Thanks go to David Oliver for his support, driving the mini bus, lending the use of his own car for transporting the teams clubs & trolleys. David Underwood & Stuart Goode supported the team on the day & thanks also to Danny O''Neill for his support & advice on the day.

County vs Cambridgeshire Friendly Match
Mon 29th Mar
On March 28th at Gog Magog Golf Club the county were entertained by Cambridgeshire for the first friendly match of the year. After some intense training sessions throughout the winter mainly focused on the mental aspects of the game, it was time to implement some of the ideas introduced to the team by Professionals Rob Cheney and Maurice Campbell.

In keeping with our policy of bringing on younger players, the ten man team contained seven players under the age of twenty one, and as usual Cambridgeshire selected their strongest and most experienced side.

The morning foursomes were played over the old course and were halved, although it took two birdies on the last two holes from Cambridgeshire in the first match to achieve a half.

The afternoon singles were played over the Wandlebury course and once again the singles were halved, with Rob Sutton holing from 6 feet on the last to defeat Lee Yearn.

The two most pleasing aspects of the match were our foursomes performance where we were unlucky not to lead going into the singles, and that we won all the tight matches coming down the last few holes when the pressure was on.

Our next match against Northamptonshire is at Pavenham on Sunday 11th April. This fixture clashes with the Palmeston trophy at Brocket Hall unfortunately, so we shall rely heavily on the squad of players.

Thanks to all those County officials who supported the side, it is much appreciated.

Annual General Meeting
Fri 26th Feb
The County Golf Union AGM was held on Tuesday 23rd February at Pavenham Park Golf Club in their newly rebuilt and impressive clubhouse. 43 members attended, despite the return of wintry weather. County President, David Oliver formally opened the meeting, then all were welcomed by the Vice Captain of the home club, Mr Richard Martin who wished the County a successful meeting. The formal reports that had been previously circulated were adopted, after appropriate verbal updates and questions from the floor.
The draw for the 2010 Mid Handicap League was made, and then David Oliver formally handed over the Presidency, and control of the meeting, to Christopher Foster, the new County President.
The Officers were then elected, and appointments made to the various roles for the coming year as previously outlined in the Agenda. Full details can be found via the "Info" tab on the website. We wish everyone a very successful 2010.

Future Stars of Bedfordshire Golf
Tue 2nd Feb
Bedfordshire County Union held its first Talent Identification Programme (TIP) training day on 10th December 2009 at Biggleswade Golf Range. The coaches involved were Rob Cheney (Head Professional at Biggleswade Golf Range) and Maurice Campbell (Head Professional at Leighton Buzzard GC) .

The first session was broken into two with Rob worked on putting skills in the indoor heated putting area, whilst Maurice got the short straw and did his session on the 54 Shot Challenge outside in very cold conditions. Both coaches have a background of Mental Preparation coaching and this the main area''s being worked on during the sessions. A second training session was held on 19th January 2010, when the groups changed over, and again Rob & Maurice providing a quality coaching session.

The following players have been selected for the 2010 TIP programme:

U12's Ryan SMITH and Jack SLATER
U14's Bradley FINCH
U16's Jack TURNER , Ryan STAMP, Lewis BLAIRE and Lewis ADAMS
U18's Connor BOYLE and Matt HILL
U21's Gavin SAMUELS , Michael GEORGE , Rob SUTTON and Alex HARRIS

We are keen to get all CLUB JUNIOR ORGANISERS involved in the TIP process as we need your help to make sure that juniors are informed of the trial dates and County tournaments. It''s important that juniors participate in these events to show how they compare against the best players from other clubs around the county in their respective age groups.

The next TIP coaching session is being held at Biggleswade Golf Range on 18th February 2010 from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, and anybody wishing to see the players in action is very welcome to come along.

This is an exciting time for Bedfordshire Golf and hopefully with the introduction of TIP and implementation of the five year plan we will reap the rewards in the not too distant future.

Annual Dinner another Winner
Sun 6th Dec
Over 150 members and guests enjoyed a great evening at Mitchell Hall, Cranfield University on Friday (4th December). A golfer''s meal of vegetable soup, steak and ale pie, bread and butter pudding and cheese and biscuits proved a hit with everyone - washed down of course with the odd glass or two.
During the evening the trophies for the Winter Foursomes and Summer Scratch leagues were presented and South Beds GC celebrated a double by winning both premier trophies - Paul Rogerson, Scratch Team Captain collects Trophy below.
County Captain, Paul Kirkwood introduced the winner of the County Matchplay Championship, Gavin Samuels (Leighton Buzzard GC) and announced the Player of the Year, Niall Johnston (Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands GC).
A new innovation this year was a raffle to raise funds for the Talent Identification Programme (TIP) which incorporates coaching for Juniors (both boys and girls). Phil Corke generously donated the first prize of a Ryan Giggs shirt signed by Ryan and Sir Alex Ferguson. Other prizes included a Ping tour bag courtesy of Morgan Darnell and a one hour video golf lesson from Rob Chaney. In the event the first prize was won by the County Captain who immediately auctioned the Ryan Giggs Shirt which was generously and successfully bid for by Colin Chatwin. Over £1,300 was raised for the TIP programme and Junior coaching.
The formalities were lead by Norman Forrest, President of the English Golf Union, a witty and accomplished speaker. County President, David Oliver expertly summarised the highlights of Bedfordshire golf this year and set out the future plans and aspirations. The evening was rounded off in style by the brilliantly funny comedian, Russ Williams.
A great night, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

Leighton Buzzard Win Mid-Handicap Final
Mon 19th Oct
Leighton Buzzard GC eventually overcame Dunstable Downs GC at the 2nd hole of the ''sudden death'' play-off after the Teams were tied at 5 -5 in the second leg of the Mid-handicap Final at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club on Saturday (17th October).
Dunstable Downs lead 3 - 2 after the first leg at Dunstable but Leighton Buzzard won 3 of the 5 matches on Saturday leaving the final tied.
A very exciting play-off followed with the final pair going out after they had a very close match going to the 18th earlier. John from Leighton Buzzard triumphed at the 2nd hole, much to the delight of his Team who were appearing in their third consecutive Final, having been runners-up in the two previous years.

Seniors in Close Match with Essex
Mon 7th Sep
The Seniors were just edged out in a very tight match at Bedford & County Golf Club yesterday (7th September). Brendan Walsh, Harry Williams, Peter Jones and Mike Turnock all won their matches and Steve Montague gained a hard fought half a point, but Essex won by 5 1/2 points to 4 1/2 points. Sadly, two regular team members who would have been playing on their home course were unavailable for this last fixture of the 2009 season.

Previously the County Seniors had given a good account of themselves when they travelled to Ashford Manor Golf Club on 27th July to play Middlesex in the Seniors League.
Phil Corke, Don Wall, Peter Jones and David Hawkins all secured good wins and Brendan Walsh halved. Steve Montague and Bill Love took their games to the 18th but were both just edged out 1 down.

Colts struggle against Essex
Sun 6th Sep
The Colts Team had a disappointing home result on Saturday (5th September) at South Beds GC, against a very strong Essex Colts team who have now secured the 2009 league title with this win.

Again, Bedfordshire struggled with team selection having 5 potential players unavailable for selection with fixture clashes. However, there are positives. Connor Boyle looks a real prospect for next season & has fitted in very well at Colt level at only 16 years old. Connor was unlucky not to open his account on the day losing both his foursome match with Chris Sweetnam & his singles game playing well up the order, on the 18th green. Well done Connor, great attitude.

The score line however does flatter Essex with 5 games being decided on the 18th and result could easily have been 8-4 to Essex. Tom Munkley appears to have established himself at this level & secured our only win of the match with a solid 2/1 victory over Adam Morris ex Bath University Golf Team player - well done Tom. Rob Sutton, as always played very solid golf & put in a fighting performance in gaining a halved game. Matt Oborne played very well eventually losing on the 18th being under par for his round.

I would like to thank all the players who committed to this fixture & we now move on to our TIP programme & development plan for 2010.

Congratulations to John O''Gaunt who won the 2009 Tavistock Trophy Final in a very tight finish at South Beds GC on Friday (21st August). The photo shows the winning team with County President, David Oliver and the trophy.
Despite some very heavy rain, both the players and the course stood up well, which is more than can be said of some scorecards - see other photo!

County finish the season on a positive note
Tue 18th Aug
In this, the final league match of the season, four teenagers; Blane Breheny, Matt Hill, Niall Johnston and Robert Sutton were selected.
The pairs in the morning foursomes worked out well with all four pairs finishing strongly, particularly over the last couple of holes, so Bedfordshire took a lead of 3 1/2 to 1/2 into lunch. Middlesex were stung by this and came out really fired up for the afternoon singles. Roberto Laino (Bedford & County) played very steadily and lead 3 up at one stage only to be pegged back to level after seventeen holes, but he sunk a great birdie putt from off the eighteenth green to win 1up.
16 year old Matt Hill (Leighton Buzzard) who only made his debut for the County Team two weeks earlier, played sound golf and won on the 16th 3-2 - another excellent performance. Unfortunately in the meantime we had lost 5 other matches leaving Andy Taylor (South Beds) in the last live game. Andy had been drafted in at the 'eleventh hour' (in fact at 7.30 am that morning) and, having won his foursomes with Charlie O'Brien in the morning, fought back from 3 down at one stage to halve his game and give Bedfordshire the critical half point to halve the Match.

Captain Paul Kirkwood was pleased, and a little relieved, to finish his two years as County Captain on a positive note - well done Paul.

Two weeks earlier, Bedfordshire had included 5 teenagers in the match against BB&O at South Beds Golf Club on Sunday (2nd August). The Team was completely overwhelmed by a strong BB&O side in the morning foursomes although Captain, Paul Kirkwood and Matt Hill, who performed very well, took their match to the 17th.
In the afternoon, first game out Roberto Laino gained a very creditable half although he was disappointed having been 3 up with 3 to play and was then blitzed with 3 birdies by his opponent. Unfortunatly that was the only score in the singles but Craig Nield led for most of his match only to lose on the eighteenth. Matt Hill played excellently on his debut and took his game to the eighteenth and two other youngsters, Blane Breheny and Robert Sutton, only lost at the 17th.

Boys Championships - Bedford & County
Sat 1st Aug
Blane Breheny (South Beds) became Boys Champion on Thursday (30th July) at Bedford & County Golf Club. Matt Hill (Leighton Buzzard) was Under 16 Champion, whilst Josh Conte (Bedford & County) was the Handicap Champion.
After the morning round, Matt led the field by 2 shots after recording a magnificent 69, the low round of the day. Early in the afternoon round, a 45 minute weather delay for thunder and lightning threatened to disrupt the players. Blane kept his concentration, however, to record a second, very consistent score of 71 to give him a final score of 142 to win the title by 2 shots from Matt. England Boys selector Roger Walmsley was watching the golf for much of the day and he surely impressed by what he saw.
The runners up were, U18s Alex Harris (John O''Gaunt), U16s Lewis Adams (Stockwood Park) and Handicap Sam Filipczak (Mowsbury).
Bedford and County Golf Club was in great condition and we thank them and their members for giving up their course for the day.

County B Championships - The Millbrook Golf Club
Tue 28th Jul
Neil Willson (John O'Gaunt GC) is the new County B Champion.

The Championships were held on Sunday (26th July) at The Millbrook Golf Club. In an extremely tense and tight finish, three players ended the 36 holes tied on a score of 153 so the final ''podium'' placings were all decided on countback, with Chris Hawksby (The Millbrook GC) runner up and Lewis Blair (Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands GC) in third place. To keep things in the family, young Jack Hawksby (The Millbrook GC) was the overall Handicap Winner.

The Millbrook course was magnificently presented and Neil in his winners speech acknowledged this and commented on how the course has improved immeasurably due to the hard work of the staff and members. Congratulations to all those who contributed to the making of very successful Championship but particularly to all the players who battled against a strong wind for most of the day.

Under strength Colts lose to Middlesex
Sun 19th Jul
With seven members of the established Colts squad playing in an Open event at Ashridge GC, four players from the U16 & U18 squads, Matt Hill, Matt Tizzard, James Brown and Connor Boyle stepped up to the mark impressively against their older and more experienced opponents.
Sadly, the morning foursomes brought no points. None of our pairs looked out of their depth, however, with credit going to Middlesex whose established pairings played some fine under par golf.
Similarly, in the afternoon the first six matches were lost to some fine golf from Middlesex whose local knowledge of a tricky golf course gave them a huge advantage. Bedfordshire finished very strongly, however, with two fine wins. Connor Boyle was never behind in his 3 & 1 victory and Michael George came back well from being one down after 13, to record a 2 & 1 win. Final score: Middlesex 10 - Bedfordshire 2.

County lose heavily to neighbours Herts
Tue 7th Jul
The County Team showed poor form in the foursomes against Hertfordshire in the league match at Knebworth Golf Club on Sunday (5th July). A solitary half a point from a battling display by Gavin Samuels and Michael George was all they had to show from the morning's play. In the afternoon singles, Niall Johnston continued his County Championship form to win convincingly 4-3 and Blane Breheny finished really well, looking as though he would secure a second win until his opponent holed a snaking, downhill 20 foot putt, for a half. Final Score Hertfordshire 10 - Bedfordshire 2.
In the previous league match the County had an excellent morning in the foursomes against Essex at Orsett Golf Club on Sunday (24th May). After losing the opening game, Captain Paul Kirkwood & Niall Johnston and Gavin Samuels & Blayne Breheny won their games comfortably. Things looked promising when Charlie O'Brien & Matt Callanan lead 3 up at one stage and 2 up with 2 holes to play but finished up halving. There was an air of optimism in the Beds camp, leading 2 1/2 - 1 1/2 at lunchtime - but Essex came out in determined mood in the afternoon and did not lose any of the singles. Beds only consolation was a half gained by Michael George who got up and down from a greenside bunker at the last. Final score Essex 9 - Beds 3.

Niall wins County-Colts Championships at AGWSGC
Tue 9th Jun
Niall Johnston of Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands Golf Club won the County Championship by 10 shots on 216 on his own course in a rain reduced 54 holes Championship at the weekend (6th/7th June). He won both the County and Colts Championships from Robert Sutton (Dunstable Downs) with Chris Sweetnam (The Bedford) edged into third place on countback.
Niall led by 3 shots after the Saturday morning round with a splendid 68 and increased his lead to 6 shots (141) at the end of the first day. 31 players qualified for the final two rounds but the morning round was abandoned due to torrential rain. The fourth round was able to be completed thanks to the sterling efforts of the Aspley Guise and WS Officials, lead by Captain Graham Bushell, and ably supported by County Cfficials in squeegeeing the greens and raking the bunkers. The course was in tremendous condition, providing a stern test of golf and coped with the adverse conditions on Sunday.
Niall went on to extend his lead by a further 4 shots, in spite of the persistent rain experienced by all the later competitors, to finish a worthy Champion. Niall also lead the Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands ''A'' Team, which included himself, Tom Munkley and Tom Snelling to the Team victory on the Saturday with a total score of 452, just edging out Dunstable Downs ''A'' on 455.

The County Championships/Competitions started last Sunday (31st May) with the County Fourball at Bedfordshire Golf Club which was in great condition. The conditions were even more difficult in the afternoon but George and Yoemans added 41 points to their morning score and ran out worthy winners - 3 points ahead of their Club colleagues and defending holders Paul Kitching & Les Tucker.

Colts edged out by neighbours Hertfordshire
Tue 2nd Jun
The Colts started promisingly on Saturday (30th May) at Bedford and County Golf Club. At one stage it looked as though we would share the points in the morning foursomes but, although Robert Sutton and Michael George closed out to win 2-1, Niall Johnston and Roberto Laino lost the last 2 holes to go 1 down.
However Johnston and Laino made amends in the afternoon singles winning both their games. Although several of the other games went close only Matt Oborne added to the Beds score with half a point achieved with a spectacular eagle on the last. Herts ran out comfortable winners 9-3.

County Captain, Paul Kirkwood lead by example and with his regular partner, Niall Johnston, won all 4 matches on Saturday - overall winning 5 and halving 1 of their 8 matches. The new pairing of youngsters Michael George and Robert Sutton did extremely well in winning 2 and halving 2 of their matches. The overall the points total of 16 was disappointing, leaving Bedfordshire in 8th place.

James Brown showed much promise in his debut for the Colts (and is likely to play for the U18's and the Colts later in the season) but James and his partner, Tom Snelling couldn't prevent Don Wall and Bill Hunter gaining a narrow 2-1 victory, which was helped by Don's chip in at the 8th. John Jones rolled in a 35-footer on the last to snatch a win 1 up for him and his partner Steve Montague.

County President, David Oliver was a little embarrassed to win the County Golf Day on his own course, with his capable partner Gavin Simpkins (Mount Pleasant GC) on 37 points.

County 6-a-side Team at Sheringham
Sun 13th Jul
The County six-aside Team travelled to Sheringham last Saturday (12th July) with reasonable expectations of doing well. The testing Sheringham course was tremendously well presented but the blustery wind and heavy showers made conditions difficult in the morning.
Graham Benson and Roberto Laino lead the way in the morning with level par rounds of 70. The rest of the Team all carded 74 or 75s. Although the afternoon conditions improved only Michael Round improved on his morning score with a 74 - but Graham Benson carded another round of 70 for level par for the day and Roberto Laino only slipped up at the last to record a 72. Paul Kirkwood, Phil Sutton and Gavin Samuels completed the Team which eventually finished 10th.

Great Win for Colts against BB&O
Sat 28th Jun
The Colts looked a different Team in their Match against BB&O at The Millbrook Golf Club on Saturday after their disappointing form against Middlesex.
The morning foursomes were always close but the Colts came through in the last nine holes to win three of the four games and lead 3-1 at lunchtime.
Several players had promising starts in the afternoon but the initiative appeared to be taken by BB&O as the games progressed. Match Captain, Niall Johnston lost on the eighteenth and Michael George lost 3-2 - but Gavin Samuels held on to win 2-1 and Blayne Breheny had his first win (3-2) in only his second outing for the Colts. Carl Baker fought back gamely from five down to lose on seventeenth and Mark Brookshaw just lost out on the 18th. However James Cooper, on his first outing for the Colts this season won 1up on the eighteenth and Chris Sweetnam clinched the victory by winning 2 up also at the last. A great win for the Colts 7-5.

Colts left too much to do against Middlesex
Sat 14th Jun
The Colts were disappointing in the League Match against Middlesex at Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands GC on Saturday. It was always going to be an uphill battle after losing the Foursomes 4-0 in the morning. Colts Manager, Richard Harris played his more experienced players at the top of the order but the Middlesex side was very impressive. First out Match Captain, Niall Johnston, playing at his home Club, lost on the 18th. Gavin Samuels (Leighton Buzzard) had his usual slow start but fought back from 4 down to halve, after being 1 up on the eighteenth tee. Chris Sweetnam (Leighton Buzzard) ground out a 3 and 2 victory. Newcomers Mark Brookshaw and Michael George ( from The Millbrook) both had good wins to bring some respectibility to the final score of 8 1/2 to 3 1/2 for Middlesex.

Benson edges out Rivals in County Champs
Mon 9th Jun
Graham Benson (Leighton Buzzard GC) was a model of consistency in becoming County Champion at Dunstable Downs GC on Sunday (8th June) with rounds of 70 71 72 and 70 - a total 283 (3 over par). He just edged out holder John Kemp (John O'Gaunt), Robert Sutton (Dunstable Downs) and County Captain, Paul Kirkwood (South Downs) to win by one shot in one of the most exciting Championships for a number of years.
The Dunstable Downs Course was presented in excellent condition, and although the conditions were fairly benign for Dunstable, it still provided a stern test of golf with none of the players finishing under par - there were only 6 under par rounds over the weekend.
Roberto Laino set the pace with a 67 to lead by 3 shots Saturday lunchtime. Junior Gavin Samuels (Leighton Buzzard) moved up the leaderboard with two 69's on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning and eventually finished runner-up in the Colts Championship. John Kemp made his familiar charge with a 68 on Sunday morning, which was matched by Roberto Laino who lead by 4 shots after 54 holes. He faltered at the tricky 10th hole and Paul Kirkwood, who had always been in contention, double bogied the 14th. The most impressive performance of the weekend was from Junior, Robert Sutton, playing off 5, who was third overall. Colts Champion and finished 16 under his handicap for 4 rounds.
But the honours go to our worthy new Champion, Graham Benson, who remained calm under pressure down the finishing straight to record a memorable victory.

County Close in Inter-Counties 4somes at Seacroft
Mon 19th May
Bedfordshire played tremendously well to finish second of 9 Counties in the Eastern Inter Counties Foursomes at Seacroft over the weekend.
A sound performance on Saturday morning gave Beds a good start, taking 6 points from Leics and Northants to be within 1 point of the leaders.
The Team continued its good form in the afternoon to take 71/2 points from fancied host County Lincs and near neighbours Herts and were joint leaders with Essex at the end of the first day.
Sunday morning Beds were matched with overnight joint leaders Essex and a strong Suffolk side but gained 5 points to lead going into the final afternoon. The first 3 pairs played well against strong oppostion from holders Cambs and a revitalised Norfolk side but only gained half a point, although 2 lost matches went to the final putt on the 18th.
The last 2 pairs played exceptionally well to win both their matches giving Beds 4 1/2 to finish up on 23, half a point short of winners Essex.
An exciting weekend with many positives for the rest of the season. The pairings worked out very well with several experienced players teamed up with Juniors and Colts and all 5 pairs won at least half of their matches.

Early Trials Show Encouraging Signs for Season
Thu 6th Mar
A County Team entertained the Club Professional's on John O'Gaunt's Carthagena Course towards the end of February. Although the Team lost narrowly to the Club Pro's there were some encouraging performances from the younger players; Niall Johnson,Matt Oborne and Gavin Samuels. Also new squad member Adam Butler and veterans,Mark Carter and Ian Tottingham showed good form.
The Annual Triangular Match between County, Colts and Under 18's Teams was hosted by John O''Gaunt on the Old Course on 2nd March. Although the County Team won overall, with the Under 18's edging out the Colts for 2nd place, there were good performances from players in all three teams.
County Captain, Paul Kirwood turned the clock back to represent the Under 18's and was back to form with 2 wins but was impressed with Colt, Niall Johnson again.Chris Gill looks as though he may end his illustrous County Career with two wins including a win against the inform Colt, Gavin Samuels. The 'Seniors' were represented by that old war horse, Phil Corke, who was a model of consistency in winning both of his matches, as did another John O'Gaunt stalwart, Nigel Tarn. Adam Butler gave another sound performance in winning both of his matches.
However the youngsters gave a good showing lead by last year's Colts Captain,Carl Baker who fought back to win his matches from one down in both with 2 holes to play. The most encouraging signs were from two under 18 players , Michael George, again a double winner and the performance of the day from Jonathan Olden who beat the inform Matt Oborne and the very sound Paul Burr. The highlight of his game was a great birdie at the 6th, a long par 4, with a drive and a 4 iron to 5 feet and sinking the putt - a rare birdie on that hole.

All in all the early preparations are going well and the signs are promising for a good season.

Neil Willson Ends Captaincy with Win
Tue 7th Aug

Bedfordshire lead after the morning foursomes 3 - 1 with Michael Round and Mark Carter winning 2 -1, Captain Neil Willson partnered by Chris Gill winning on the 18th (2up) and Paul Kirkwood & Paul Burr were awarded their game by default.
The afternoon singles started well with Michael Round birdying the last 3 holes to win 1up, Roberto Laino grinding out a well deserved half and veteran Phil Sutton scoring 7 under par to secure a win - 2up.Disappointingly Beds lost the next four singles matches but Chris Gill''s usual gritty performance, winning on the 17th, gave Bedfordshire the win 6 1/2 to 5 1/2.
A very commendable performance by the Bedfordshire Team and County Captain Neil Willson was generous in his praise for his small squad of players that had competed so well in every match this season. Overall the County has 5 points which is reflected in the games score of 26 to 22.

County Downs Middlesex at Dunstable
Mon 16th Jul
The County Team had an emphatic 8 - 4 win over Middlesex at Dunstable Downs GC on Sunday.
Although well up in all 4 morning foursomes at one time they had to settle for 2 - 2 at lunchtime, losing two matches on the 18th.
Michael Round, after his excellent 4th individual place in the East Berkshire Stag on Wednesday with scores of 68 and 70, lost to Middlesex Captain, Justin Phelps in the first of the afternoon singles. From then on it became a bit of a procession with Bedfordshire winning the next five singles and halving the last two. However the games were very close with veterans Mark Wharton and Phil Sutton both winning 2-1 on the 17th and 4 games going to the 18th ( Matt Callanan 2 up, Paul Kirkwood 1 up and Chris Gill and Ben Austin halving) with Mark Carter winning well 4-2 on his own course. Abridge too far for Bedfordshire

The six man team representing Bedfordshire of Graham Benson, John Kemp, Roberto Laino, Michael Round,Phil Sutton and Mark Wharton found the immaculate Abridge course just too testing, although conditions were virtually ideal.
Graham Benson lead the Beds scores with 73 and 74 for a total of 147 and 13th place, closely followed by John Kemp with a two round total of 150. After an excellent morning score of 73 Michael Round faded in the afternoon to finish in the lower orders of the 66 man field.

Colts Do Not Live Up To Expectations Against Essex
Wed 4th Jul
The Colts did not reach the level of performance achieved in their previous match when they met a slightly understrength Essex side at The Millbrook on 30th June. Although the day was dogged by showers The Millbrook course was in excellent condition and the Club made every effort to look after the players and officials.
The Team started well in both the morning foursomes and the afternnoon singles but disappointingly did not maintain the momentum.
Trailing 1/2 to 3 1/2 after the foursomes at lunchtime the prospects were not great. Gavin Samuels (Leighton Buzzard) and Tom Butler (Pavenham Park) continued to impress with singles wins in the afternoon, in only their second and third appearances respectively. Unfortunately they were the only home wins recorded and Essex won comfortably 9 1/2 to 2 1/2.

Another Close Match with BB&O
Mon 25th Jun
Bedfordshire looked the more likely of the two sides to prevail in this closely fought League Match at John O'Gaunt on Sunday. The successful middle order of Mark Carter/Michael Round and John Kemp/Paul Kirkwood in the morning foursomes gave a Match score of 2 -2 at lunchtime.
Michael Round, Matt Callanan and Mark Wharton got Beds off to great start in the afternoon ,winning three of the first four singles. The crucial match was probably the narrow defeat of John Kemp, one down to Steve Barwick. Our only other success came from Vice-Captain, Paul Kirkwood leaving the Match tied 6 - 6.

Kemp Storms Back to Retain County Title
Mon 18th Jun
John Kemp (JO'G) shot a stunning 10 under par on the final day (36 holes) to win the Bedfordshire County Championship last Sunday.
This looked most unlikely at lunchtime on Saturday when he trailed County Vice-Captain,Paul Kirkwood (South Beds) by 12 strokes. Paul shot a blistering 62, a new course record at host Club Leighton Buzzard, to lead by 5 strokes from Daniel Parkin (The Bedford).
Kemp showed his intent early in the afternoon when he was 5 under par but a torrential rain storm caused play to be suspended for an hour and forty minutes.Fortunately the rain stopped and thanks to the sterling efforts of the Leighton Buzzard GC staff and County Officials play resumed just afer 6.00pm and the second round was completed.
Daniel Parkin lead the 18 qualifiers for the final day at 5 under par, one shot ahead of Paul Kirkwood, with Michael Round (JO'G) a further shot back and John Kemp 8 shots adrift.
It was very pleasing to see 50% of the qualifiers (9) under 21 years old.
The Team event was incredibly close but Leighton Buzzard 'A', represented by three Colts, Eddie Cox, Gavin Samuels and Carl Baker, edged out South Beds 'A' on countback, both with an aggregate total of 427,one stoke ahead of John O'Gaunt 'A'. Leighton Buzzard will now represent Bedfordshire in the Champion Club Championship at Hesketh Golf Club on14th/15th September.
The lead changed several times on the final day but John birdied the last 3 holes for his second 66 of the day and a total of 277 (7 under par) to win by 4 strokes - from veteran Mark Wharton (JO'G) and Michael Round - his 6th Championship win. Michael won the Colts Championship on 281 by one stroke from Eddie Cox.
A superb weekends golf, excellently coordinated by Clive Allen, County Competitions Secretary and magnificently supported by Leighton Buzzard Golf Club - the Manager (Duncan), Head Greenkeeper (Ian), Professional (Maurice), Caterer (Lee) and the Bar Steward (Jason) with their respective teams.
A very worthy Champion and encouraging performances from a number of youngsters looking to the future.

County Championships offer tremendous value - 36 holes golf (18 holes for U12's/U14's and Seniors), lunch and attractive prizes on Bedfordshire's most prestigious golf courses. There is still time for entries to the County 'B' (22nd July - South Beds), Boys Championships (23rd and 26th July- The Bedford/The Millbrook), and County Foursomes (16th September - Dunstable Downs). Application forms can be downloaded from this website and sent by post with cheque or e-mail(cheque to follow in post) to County Competitions Secretary.

Beds Colts Magnificent Recovery Against BB&O
Mon 11th Jun
A relatively inexperienced Bedfordshire Colts Team fought back well to halve the match with BB&O 6- 6, after trailing 1 - 3 in the morning foursomes, away at Royal Ascot last Saturday (9th June). Gavin Samuels (Leighton Buzzard) made his debut and it was only the second appearance for Lee Beattie (Aylesbury Vale) and Tom Butler (Pavenham Park).
Colts Captain, Carl Baker (Leighton Buzzard) led by example and partnering Tom Butler for the first time they managed the only win for Bedfordshire in the morning foursomes.
Although down 1 -3 at lunchtime the team remained positive and confident that they could turn things round. Michael Round (John O'Gaunt) and Matt Oborne (Dunstable Downs) both won well early on and brought the match score to 3 - 3.
Gavin Samuels held on ,after leading 5 up, to close out his first win for Bedfordshire which brought the scores level after Lee Beattie had lost narrowly in a close fought game. The morning victors Carl Baker and Tom Butler both lost leaving Bedfordshire trailing 4 -6.However James Cooper (John O'Gaunt) and anchor man Chris Sweetnam (Leighton Buzzard) both had good wins to give Bedfordshire a well deserved half with BB&O.
It was a battling performance by the Colts and will give them confidence going into their next match against Essex at The Millbrook GC later this month.

County Let Morning Advantage Slip
Sun 27th May
The County Team went to South Herts GC with confidence high after their excellent performance at Seacroft and boosted by the addition of veteran Mark Wharton (JO'G) and Graham Benson (LB).
In atrocious conditions Beds had much the better of the morning foursomes and were up in all four matches through 9 holes. Paul Kirkwood and Paul Burr (SB) pressed on strongly to win 5&4 and Mark Wharton and young Matt Callanan (JO'G) saw off their opponents 3&2. The other two games went to the 18th where Mark Carter(DD) and Michael Round(JO'G) won 2 up but Graham Benson and Chris Gill just missed out 2 down.
Although steady rain continued through the afternoon the course held up well and the match was completed. Disappointingly for Beds the run of good results dried up and Hertfordshire won the singles 5 1/2 to 2 1/2 - the match going to the 18th in the final game where Chris Gill finally succumbed to Laurence Allen 2 down. The final score was Beds 5 1/2 - Herts 6 1/2 - in many respects a complete reversal of last year when Beds won the last 6 singles to narrowly defeat Herts.

Excellent County Performance at Seacroft
Fri 25th May
County Captain, Neil Willson decided to only take 10 players to Seacroft, including himself - to ensure that the players remained focused - to participate in the Eastern Inter-Counties Foursomes.Beds had a strong Team this year and the pairings worked well.
In the first round on Saturday morning Beds were drawn gainst strong oppostion in Cambridgeshire, the eventual winners, and the home County of Lincolnshire. Beds managed to win four points with, the final pair of Chris Gill (SB) and veteran Steve Kanagh (JO'G),who first appeared in this event 30 years ago, winning both of their matches.Sound performances in the afternoon saw us gaining 6 points against Essex and Northants, with Captain Neil Willson (JO'G) and Mark Carter (DD) starring with two wins. This put Beds up to equal 3rd place and very much in the mix although somewhat off the leaders Cambs and Leics.
On Sunday morning we were drawn against our local rivals Hertfordshire and Norfolk. If a couple of putts had dropped it could have been a clean sweep but in the end Beds won 8 points with all pairs scoring - an excellent performance to move us up to equal second with Leics and just 3 points behind Cambs. On the final afternoon we were drawn against two strong Counties; Leics, who finished 2nd overall and Suffolk who finished 4th.Although we started well we couldn't maintain the momentum from the morning and ultimately won 4 points with the top scoring pair of Paul Burr and Matt Callanan (SB) winning both of their matches to finish with 6 points for the event. The ever reliable pair of Steve Kavanagh and Chris Gill were close behind with 5 1/2 points.
The Team eventually finished in a very creditable 3rd place - a fantastic performance and good to see Bedfordshire competing for Eastern Inter-Counties Foursomes title again.

New Juniors Leagues off to Successful Start
Wed 11th Apr
The first matches in the newly created U14's and U16's Leagues were well received by the boys.

Bedfordshire entertained Herts and Middlesex at Bedford and County on 3rd April for the inaugaral U14''s triangular League Match. The format is similar to the County and Colts Leagues - foursomes in the morning (9 holes) and singles in the afternoon (10-a-side).
Although the strong wind was bitterly cold (the boys coped with the conditions better than the officials) it remained dry after an early shower. The boys soon got to grips with playing two matches simultaneously.A very strong Hertfordshire team ran out comfortable winners in both of their matches and Middlesex overcame Bedfordshire in a closer game.
The players dined with their playing partners after the match and from the chatter it was obvious that the whole event was received very enthusiastically.

Hertfordshire entertained Bedfordshire and BB&O,hosted by Harpenden Golf Club, in the first U16''s League Match a week later. This was similar in format but with 8-a-side and 18 holes foursomes in the morning. It was a fine Spring day for golf and the excellent scores reflected this.Again a very strong Hertfordshire Team ran out winners in both of their matches but their result against BB&O was in doubt until the last game.BB&O were successful against an inexperienced Beds side.Again the banter during the after match meal showed how much the boys had enjoyed the day.

Very promising starts to both these Juniors Leagues in their infancy.

County Team in Close Encounters in Friendlies
Wed 4th Apr
Friendlies against Cambridgeshire are always close games and the match this year on 25th March was no exception.Played on a blustery but fine day on the Carthagena Course at John O''Gaunt seven of the games went to the eighteenth green.
In the morning foursomes Vice-Captain,Paul Kirkwood and South Beds partner,Andy Horner, gained a convincing win to give the home Team a good start. This was followed up by Roberto Laino (Bedford and County) and Craig Neild (South Beds) securing a good win. However,Cambs won the remaining foursomes to lead 3-2 at lunchtime.
An early win for Chris Gill (South Beds) was encouraging but Cambs held on to halve the singles 5-5,with Beds unable to convert several halved games to wins.An encouraging performance fron an experimental Team, particularly the welcome return of young Matt Callanan (South Beds) to the County Team, which he celebrated with a victory over Cambs veteran Steve Jarvis.
Overall result Beds 7 Cambs 8

The following Sunday the County Team travelled to Cold Ashby in the North of Northamptonshire.Although a bright dry day there was a keen North-Easterly wind which made conditions difficult on the hilly Cold Ashby course.
Home advantage became apparent in the morning foursomes and Beds found themseves 3 down after the first 3 games, although Matt Callanan and Niall Johnson (Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands) battled through to the 18th.However,the anchor pairing of Ben Austin (South Beds) and Ed Cox (Leighton Buzzard) gelled well and closed out their game on the 15th to win 4-3 to leave Beds struggling 4-1 down at lunchtime.
The afternoon singles were more closely contested once the Beds Team was more familiar with the course. In the top match John O''Gaunt''s Michael Round beat England youngster Andy Myers and this was followed by Nigel Tarn, also from John O''Gaunt, overcoming home player Greg Croxton.
There were further wins for South Beds players Matt Callanan and Ben Austin.Mark Carter (Dunstable Downs) rounded off the afternoon with a convincing win over Northants Captain,Neil Presto.Eventually Beds won the afternoon singles 5 1/2 - 4 1/2.
It was always going to be an uphill task after the disappointing foursomes but nonethe less some encouraging individual performances.
Overall result Beds 6 1/2 Cambs 8 1/2.

County Team Start 2007 Campaign with Fine Win
Wed 7th Mar
The annual fixture between the County Team against the Bedfordshire Club Professionals resumed at John O''Gaunt on the Carthagena Course last Saturday.
Honours were even after the morning Foursomes 2-2; the most notable result was the comeback by Chris Gill and Richard Harris who were 2 down with 3 holes to play and shared the points, halving the last in birdies.
Early singles wins by Mark Wharton and Paul Burr put the County Team in a strong position but there was nothing to separate the remaining singles with 4 of the last 5 games going to the 18th.The County Team managed to secure 4 more wins and ran out comfortable winners 8-4.
